Of all of the occupations out there, construction work can be one of the most dangerous. Between the various tools required and the heights to which workers must climb, risks are plentiful. And as any workplace accidents attorney in New York knows, working on skyscrapers can be especially dangerous.

Recently, a small fire started at the construction site of the World Trade Center in lower Manhattan. The fire occurred in a small storage unit near the memorial center. While no one was injured in this particular accident, the World Trade Center construction site is no stranger to workplace injuries. Since the beginning of 2012, at least six other accidents have occurred at the construction site, with four leading to injuries since June.

Workers involved in construction accidents may be entitled to workers’ compensation benefits, which are intended to make sure that workers do not experience the financial hardship that can accompany numerous medical bills and time away from work. These benefits can include compensation for medical expenses, rehabilitation, and disability. Workers’ compensation generally covers workplace accidents and may cover injuries caused during regular working hours and breaks, and any aggravation of preexisting conditions, such as back pain. A workers’ compensation claim is pursued as an alternative to a lawsuit, and benefits are automatically awarded to the injured employee.

Liability may fall on the construction company itself, or third-party contractors, managers or property owners, depending on the cause of the accident. Thankfully, no deaths have been reported at the World Trade Center site in 2012. However, if a construction worker is killed in a workplace accident, the surviving family members may be able to bring a wrongful death action and recover damages.
