9 hurt in car accident in upstate New York

Nine people were hospitalized following a car accident in upstate New York last Tuesday.

The car accident happened near Sterling, on Route 3 and Martville Road, according to a trooper from the New York State Police.

Authorities are still investigating the accident, but early reports indicate that a Volkswagen Jetta and a Buick Century collided with one another around 4:30 p.m.

At this point, it does not seem that any of the injuries were life-threatening.

More about what caused this incident will be learned in the future. In general, there are several common causes of car accidents, including:

  • Distracted driving: Drivers who are not paying attention to the road because they are texting, talking on their cellphones, changing the radio station or what have you are a leading cause of car accidents. It is illegal to use a phone while driving (in most circumstances) in New York, but of course, that does not mean people always follow that law.
  • Weather conditions: When it is snowing or raining heavily, road conditions become dangerous and can lead to car accidents. Of course, if a driver is speeding or behaving recklessly, the weather cannot be blamed entirely.
  • Mechanical failure: If a vehicle’s brakes fail, or something else goes wrong, the driver of that vehicle may not be able to act and stop a collision from happening. If the driver knew or should have known that his or her car was not in safe driving shape, he or she may be liable for any damage he or she winds up causing.
  • Intoxication: Drivers who are drunk or high on drugs can create exceptionally unsafe circumstances.
