A staple of the Manhattan nightlife scene was badly injured in a car crash in the Hamptons over the weekend. The tragic and violent incident marred the beginning of the tourist season in a region popular with summering New York residents.
The 33-year-old man who was involved in this car crash owns several high-profile entertainment establishments, including the Randolph, and was once romantically linked to a socialite, making him a popular entry in the gossip pages.
According to authorities, he was driving his 2008 Jeep Wrangler eastbound on Montauk Highway near Amagansett around 3:10 a.m. Saturday when he struck a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction.
Then, a taxi unsuccessfully tried to avoid the crash and collided with the Jeep.The 33-year-old man was flown to Stony Brook University Hospital with injuries that are believed to very serious, if not quite life-threatening.
The 51-year-old Amagansett woman in the other vehicle was taken to Southampton Hospital with serious injuries.
The 27-year-old Islandia man who was driving the taxi was not injured.
Both the 33-year-old and the 51-year-old woman were believed to be intoxicated at the time of the crash. Both are likely to be charged with DWI and will be arraigned at a to-be-determined date after they convalesce.
As summer approaches and we attend picnics, barbecues, and family gatherings, it is important that we all remember to consume alcohol in moderation — and that people who do not and cause property damage or injury, as a result, are responsible for the harm they cause.
